Cargo ship sank in Arabian Sea near Mumbai Coast
The Panama-flagged, Qatar-based M V Rak Carrier, on voyage from Lubuk Tutung, Indonesia, to Dahej, Gujarat sank 20 nautical miles (37 kms) off Mumbai on Thursday morning (August 4, 2011). The ship was carrying 60,054 tonnes of coal, 291 tonnes of fuel oil and 50 tonnes of diesel. The coal was meant for the Adani Group.
Indian Coast Guard Helicopters and special ships were rushed to help 30 people who worked on a commercial ship. All crew members have been saved; which consisted of Jordanians, Romanians and Indonesians.
Experts say the cargo remains sealed and that no oil has spilled into the sea. There are fears that underwater wave action can breach the ship, causing havoc to marine life. A spokesperson said the cargo was insured and so its loss will have no financial impact on the company.
